On Why Horror Flicks Make Great Date Movies

2007 October 15

With Halloween just around the corner, I’m starting to remember the fun times I had watching horror films.

I’m not really a fan of the genre. Why? Because I always felt like these films don’t really make much sense. And I don’t like movies wherein the monsters pop out from everywhere and don’t die no matter how hard the “Oh-So-Good-Looking” lead actor tries.

But there are those times where in your college buddies kidnap you, take you with them to the mall and the next thing you know you’re sitting beside your crush inside a movie theater. During moments like those, even God couldn’t get you off your seat.

We all know what happens when the movie starts rolling and the scenes get more and more intense. Just in case you were wondering, no, I didn’t go as far as buying a bucket of popcorn and sharing the entire thing with her – then slip my hand on her buttered fingers as she tries to get some. Eww… I ain’t that sleazy.

Anyway, that’s how I got myself to watch The Ring. The movie wasn’t that memorable but the joy I felt while watching the movie with someone (whom at that moment) I liked – that’s priceless.

And I’m sure there are lots of people out there who had been through a more or less similar experience. That’s why horror flicks make great date movies. Why? Let me break it down for you…

Romance: Take your date to a romantic movie and you’d end up comforting her the entire night because she’s going to remember every bit of detail about her ex or that crush of hers that would even look her in the eye. Her past relationships would be the last thing you’d want to talk about on a date – especially if it’s the first one.

Sci-fi: Now these are my kind of movies. And it’s a good date movie – assuming you don’t want to get laid or you’re giving your girlfriend a good reason to dump you.

Comedy: Comedy is fine. Just make sure you consider what kind of comedy your girlfriend is into. Maybe she’s the kind of girl who’d rather watch Borat than Dogma. If that’s the case I suggest you take her to a sci-fi movie right after you’re through watching Borat. Believe me, you’re better off without her.

With horror movies, you’ll never have those problems. Think about it; at every horrific moment she’ll be reaching for your arms. After the movie the two of you will laugh about how scared you both were (or fight over who got scared more). Then a couple of days later, you’d still have something to talk about.

And with that I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Sadako for giving me one of the best times I ever had. I’ve never been so happy to see a girl climb out of a well.
