Anime series to celebrate Halloween!

With Halloween just around the corner, we can feel the air getting a little bit colder, and the nights a little darker. So why not complete the mood by getting yourself a copy of Jigoku Shojo and Ghost Hunt. Both series focuses on the supernatural but in totally different ways.

Jigoku Shojo or Hell Girl focuses on Ai Enma, a girl who comes to you and delivers revenge for you on the person tormenting you. The way to contact Ai is through a website called HellCorrespondense.com, and the only way to access the site is at 12 midnight and when you truly hold a grudge against someone. Ai will ensure that your request is fulfilled, but it comes with a heavy price. For Ai to accept your request you must enter a pact with her, and the deal is after you die your soul will go to hell. Hmmmm, I don’t really know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. You get revenge on the person you hate the most, however when you die it’s a one way escalator trip downwards, you decide. Jigoku Shojo has some similarities to the Deathnote series, however instead of writing the person’s name on a notebook Hell Girl has you writing the name of the person on Hell Girl’s website. And unlike Deathnote where you can kill off anyone you wanted to, Hell Girl only allows you to kill the people tormenting you.

Ghost Hunt on the other hand is a story about a group of paranormal researchers headed by the young but smart Kazuya Shibuya who is also founder of the Shibuya Paranormal Research Institute. They offer their services to people who think they are being haunted by ghost and spirits. Ghost Hunt is similar to the real life Ghost Hunter series headed by the group called T.A.P.S., wherein they use high tech gadgets along old fashioned ghost hunting techniques to explain the unknown. Helping Shibuya on his operations are: Mai Taniyama, a high school girl with a fascination with the supernatural and latent psychic abilities. Koujo Lin, Shibuya’s silent assistant and guardian who is adept in exorcism and spirit summoning. Houshou Takigawa, an outspoken monk and musician, but has the best abilities against ghost among the group. Ayako Matsuzaki, a rather vain and egotistic Shinto priestess, her abilities rival that of Takigawa’s but she can only use them under certain conditions. John Brown, a 19 year old catholic priest, good natured and soft spoken who also has good knowledge on exorcism, and Masako Hara, a withdrawn and introverted spirit medium. She can sense the presence of spirits, and is always the person to confirm whether the group is dealing with something supernatural or not.

So for all you otakus and non-otakus, if you have nothing better to do on Halloween like me, get into the mood by watching these series…. who knows you might even get a visit from the Hell Girl herself, bwahahahahaha (ahem, ahem).

Heh, we both had the same idea! Anime for Halloween. I picked ten series to post but Jigoku Shoujo was on my list :) I know of Ghost Hunt but haven’t gotten around to checking it out. Will have to see what will go on Halloween… anime marathons with friends are always fun. ^^
