Give Geeks A Chance
“And we geeks are so lovely. We like to give to our girls poetry and play music to them. We like to cover them in flowers, and spend the whole night telling them how much they are beautiful. And we like to protect them, and hold their hands and always keep a smile on their cute faces. But girls don’t like it.“
It’s funny what people write on their comments. That particular one came from another blog that I encountered in the net. The blog talks of how geeks are when they’re in love. The comment was funny because it’s true.
I know I should have just commented on that site but I think some readers here would actually find this thought provoking. I’m not going to talk about being in love and all that because Cupid and I aren’t exactly friends right now.
Rather, I’d like to put more emphasis on how geeks are being treated nowadays. Has it really come to a point where geeks like the guy who made this comment had to be so bitter? Towards the end of the guy’s statements he was actually suggesting that geeks should not be so open to girls – to avoid being taken advantage of.
You see, this guy had been played with in the past (hey, it was a long comment – he practically told his life story there). As he puts it: “So I know how hard is for a geek to deal with people. Their code is buggish and they just don’t behave as they should, procedurally talking. Like for some input you will expect specific corresponding output, but with people is just not like that.“
Obviously this guy had been through a lot. I doubt however that this is just an isolated case.
Geeks are people who tend to focus on things that other people tend to not give any crap about. Well, that’s my definition. And based on that I feel like there are more geeks out there than people think. A guy who could actually say how many times Homer Simpson said “D’oh” in a season – that’s a Simpsons geek. Or a girl who could tell from memory which Playboy Playmate posed for a particular issue – that’s a playboy geek.
And just how do people react to that? They’d probably say that these kind of people got too much time on their hands and that they’re not focusing on the real important stuff like politics or studying the absurdity that is Trump’s hair.
I just wish it came to a point where geeks are just as equally respected as the school’s basketball team star players or that pretty guy who manages to make the girls scream at the top of their lungs. Geeks have more contribution to society than people think.
Why can’t a geek be treated like a Jedi? Yeah, that’s right – a motherfuckin’ Jedi. Who would dare tell me those guys aren’t geeks? They sure spent a lot of time learning all those cool moves and all. They never get the girl (all except for Anakin Skywalker but he ended up killing “the girl” so that doesn’t really count). Yeah, they are as geek as a geek could get. The only difference is that these guys could kick ass – something normal geeks only wish of doing.
These Jedis are respected throughout their universe and much feared by the bad guys. I wish geeks on this planet were just as close. A geeky world is a happy world. It’s about time everyone accepted that.

No… comparing geeks to Jedis is as geeky as geeks could get.

I’ll take that as a compliment…
